Light
The ideal spot for your stunning alocasia is any brightest location possible. If your alocasia plant is not receiving enough sunlight it needs, you will know that reasonably quickly as large yellow or brown spots will begin to appear on its leaves. Don't worry; your plant isn’t dying. It is stressed and can be good once it starts getting more sunlight. Alocasias thrive and drop their leaves very quickly, so nothing to worry about; they’ll soon begin to look fine again. An area with bright indirect light is best, although if you can provide direct sunlight for a few hours every day, your plant will thrive much faster.
Water
It is easiest to let the soil of your beautifully potted Alocasias completely dry out in a slightly more cool temperate environment just before watering them again. The amount of total dryness you permit for your plant will rely on the amount of heat and sunlight you’re working in. Usually, you should let the top 3rd of the soil dry out completely before giving your Alocasias water. However, it will vary depending on the spot you locate your Alocasias and the time of year.
💡 Tip: Use a soil moisture meter to prevent overwatering and underwatering your plant.
Care For Your Alocasia in Winter
Preventing dormancy is pretty straightforward. Your plant needs a bit extra warmth and some bright sunlight. To get that, make sure to place your plant in the sunniest spot possible. If you can provide your Alocasias with direct sunlight, they will be very grateful! It can go a very long way in keeping your alocasia happy.
To keep your alocasia warmer, you also require watering it much less. Make sure to keep your plant almost bone dry throughout winter. However, water a little bit about every two to three weeks to maintain it, otherwise dry soil is good. During the winter season, your plant isn’t going to be intaking as much water, and that water will also evaporate very slowly, so alocasia will be good in dry soil. The dry soil will also be full of thousands of tiny air pockets, helping to insulate your Alocasias roots and keeping them slightly warmer throughout cooler months.
Fertiliser
Due to the highly fast-growing nature of your Alocasias, it’s ideal for fertilising them frequently with a liquid fertiliser. You can apply fertiliser every time you start watering alocasia during summer and about every second time you water it in autumn or spring. Don’t fertilise Alocasias in winter.
Humidity
Moderate humidity is usually fine for various common varieties but be careful if you’re using cooling or heating for very long periods as it will completely dry out the air around your alocasias. Low humidity levels will result in dry, brown, crispy leaf tips.
